Melvins - Eggnog (1991) & Lysol (1992)

Some Melvins were requested a while back and I hesitated posting anything at the time because I thought this blog had a lot of Melvins already and their music really isn't to difficult to find out there if you just take the time to look.  But I just saw them play a great show at the Troubadour last night and I thought I'd share my personal favorites.  I don't think I really need to go into any description of the band because we all know who they are.  Eggnog and Lysol are really the Melvins in their prime in my opinion.  The early 90's were sort of a slower sludgier phase for them and their music was just so much different than everything else coming out at the time.  I was fortunate enough to see them play these two albums together in their entirety at a concert a couple of years ago and was one of the best shows I've ever seen.

Tad & Pussy Galore - Damaged Split Single (1989)

Pussy Galore & Tad both did covers of Black Flag's Damaged I & II.  I actually prefer these versions to the originals myself.  This single was released as part of the Sub Pop Singles Of The Month Club which they just started up again recently.  What a brilliant idea that was.  The first couple of years of those singles in particular were great.  Who knew at the time that a $5 a month subscription would put out the most collectible record of the decade.

Thrones - Untitled Demo (1996) & Melvins - Joe Preston (1992)

This is Joe Preston's very first release as Thrones that was released as a cassette from the "Punk In My Vitamins" label.  I don't know how many of these are out there exactly but my guess is not a lot.  They were probably given out at shows just as a taste until his first proper LP Alurane came out.  There are no song titles, just side A and side B.

I'm also including Joe's Melvins solo record which could really be considered the first Thrones record technically speaking.  With the song Hand Over Speaking sounding a lot like Joe's pre-Melvins band Earth.  This record actually came out a year before Earth 2 which is considered by many to be the record that kicked off the whole drone/doom genre.  Now this is all subjective of course, but I think everyone understands my point.  It's something to think about... It's my personal favorite of the Melvins solo albums.
